Simon thrilled to be a Saint

Life has been pretty good lately for Matt Simon.

The former Northern Illinois wide receiver waited for an opportunity to get a look from an NFL team. He got it with a tryout offer from the New Orleans Saints. Simon showed up this past weekend at mini-camp and impressed the Saints coaching staff enough that the Saints signed him to a rookie free agent deal.

Now, he is looking forward to the next step.

I talked with Simon on the phone earlier tonight and he's ecstatic that he has the chance to keep living out his dream.

"I haven't been able to wipe that smile off my face," Simon said.

Simon said he will head back to New Orleans on Sunday for workouts and has another camp in the first week of June. Training camp is after that and he'll have to battle for a spot again.

Simon also said he's kept in contact with former NIU wideout and New York Jets rookie Britt Davis throughout the process.

"I talked with Britt the other day and he's heading out [to New York] next week it's exciting time for us guys with those contracts," Simon said.

Look for more on Simon and Davis later this week in the Daily Chronicle.
