Happy April, everyone. There is a bit of news today on the Huskies.
First, running back Justin Anderson will be out for the rest of spring practice after suffering a right foot injury at Tuesday's practice. This will almost certainly affect the competition at running back, which Anderson has been a part of. The senior was the starter for the 2008 season-opener against Minnesota, but saw his carries drop dramatically and finished the season with 209 rushing yards. Anderson rushed for 1,245 yards as a sophomore, the final year that Joe Novak was the head coach of the Huskies.
Cornerback Chris Smith, who had impressed everyone with his athleticism in the first week of spring practice, will be out for an undetermined amount of time with a left knee injury, also suffered on Tuesday. Smith is expected to be back before the end of spring practice, but the date is still to be determined.
Running back Alan Smith has a right ankle injury. He will be evaluated again and his long-term status is to be determined.
Northern Illinois continues spring practice tomorrow at 7:20 a.m. at Huskie Stadium. Practices are open to the public and we'll have a full wrap here tomorrow, plus a video interview.
Answering your questions
NIUHuskiesFan asked: "John, is this an April Fools joke or are you serious? Three more injuries with two of them to players who will be playing this season isn't good, if true."
John Sahly: This is no April Fools joke, the injuries are real.
