Young pianists earn awards

DeKALB - DeKalb piano teacher Eva Woo entered 50 of her piano students in the Geneva Swedish Days Granquist Music Competition, which took place June 26. Twenty-six students won trophies, and the others won ribbons. Some of the winners' competition pieces included Bach Italian concertos, preludes and fugues; Chopin waltzes, "Nocturne in C major" and "Polonaise in G"; Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12", Mendelssohn' s "Rondo and Spinning Song"; and Beethoven, Hayden, Mozart, Clementi and Kuhlau sonatas and sonatinas. Two outstanding trophies went to Sam Kirk, 14, of DeKalb; and Emilee McDowell, 11, of DeKalb. Nine first-place trophies were awarded to Laura Bayle, 17, of DeKalb, Jacob Correa, 12, of Sycamore; Nicole Hanson, 10, of Sycamore; Tyler Kielb, 16, of DeKalb; Jonathan Liang, 17, of St. Charles; Jessica Luo, 6, of DeKalb; Joly Wu, 10, of DeKalb; Cora Buckle, 14, and Hannah Truckenbrod, 12, (duet) of DeKalb. Eight second-place trophies were given to Cora Buckle, 14, of DeKalb; D.J. Hill, 17, of DeKalb; Daenna Lundberg, 17, of Sycamore; Michael Ouelette, 10, of DeKalb; Rochelle Torok, adult, of DeKalb; Amanda Truckenbrod, 11, of DeKalb; Hannah Truckenbrod, 12, of DeKalb; and Rachel Kirk, 10, of DeKalb. Seven third-place trophies went to Amy Fink, 15, of DeKalb, Hayden Hallgren, 15, of DeKalb; Jan Hill, adult, of Sycamore; Sunshine Yang Li, 16, of DeKalb; Katie Seibert, 9, of DeKalb; Lisa Wessels, I8, of Waterman, and Diana Yin, 13, of DeKalb. Superior and Excellence ribbons were awarded to Kathleen Albano, 9, of Sycamore; Joe Anger, 10, of DeKalb; Hannah Buckle, 11, of DeKalb; Colton Burns, 9, of Sycamore; Emma Crandall, 8, of Sycamore; Katie Doonan, 13, of Sycamore; Merisa Doonan, 16, of Sycamore; Lauren Hellmuth, 17, of Waterman, Kristen Jones, 14, of Kirkland; Ariel Kielb, 13, of DeKalb; Katie Mao, 6, of DeKalb; Mitchell Meerman, 12, of Sycamore; Jennifer Norreiko, 10, of DeKalb; Matthew Ouellete, 15, of DeKalb; Anna Potsic, 10, of DeKalb; Elyse Roberts, 9, of DeKalb; Hayley Roberts, 13, of DeKalb; Eleanor Turk, 13, of Sycamore; Ashley Weber; 12, of DeKalb; Brandon Wessels, 14, of Waterman; Ian Wheeler, 17, of Sycamore; Kara Wong, 6, of DeKalb; Lucy Wu, 15, of DeKalb; Gracia Watson, 6, of Sycamore, Elizabeth Watson, 8, of Sycamore, and Joyce Woo, 13, of DeKalb. The winners will share their talent at the Pine Acres Care Center in August. The young pianists are happy to contribute their gifts to serve the community.
