Cold comforts draw to a close

While many are happy to see winter's grip leave, the Boy Scouts of Troop 33 will miss these cold, gray days. They were filled with unique adventures not possible during the rest of the year. Driving a dog sled down a wooded trail in northern Wisconsin was a dream come true, one of many dreams coming true for them this winter. Imagine traveling by snowshoe miles across the frozen surface of Lake Superior to discover intricate ice caves along the rugged Apostle island national lakeshore. Another weekend found them at 24 below zero as they snowmobiled along wooded trails and across frozen lakes, exploring 60 miles of northern wilderness. They hiked through sandstone canyons to finding giant frozen waterfalls at Starved Rock State Park, then watched bald eagles swooping down to feed in the Illinois rover. Troop 33 Scouts were involved in 23 program activities from December through March. They also enjoyed cabin camp- outs, sledding trips, museums, Klondike Derby, Vigil Fire, indoor rock climbing, Scuba instruction, service projects, bowling, lockins, merit badge classes, skiing and snowboarding trips. They visited Navy Pier in Chicago and the Mall of America near Minneapolis. Winter was a nonstop series of action-packed adventure. Cold, wind, ice and snow are usually reasons for muttering bad things as you scrape the ice off your windshield. To a group of energetic Scouts, those things signify a challenge to overcome and a source for new winter experiences. Winter might be behind us now, but the memories of the past few months will remain vivid in the minds of Troop 33 Scouts for a long time to come.
